Characters
FEMALE
Mina Westerman (20 – 30)
Headstrong, bookish heiress to a sugar trading company, and head of the Westerman household. English rose. Engaged to and Marries Jonathan. After becoming one of Dracula’s targets, she helps to lead the other characters in their fight against the vampire. Cultured British accent required.
Lucy Westerman (18 – 30)
Uninhibited and eccentric heiress to a sugar trading company; Mina’s younger sister and fiancée to Arthur Seward. Lucy is highly strung, wilful and sensual. She is seduced by Dracula and eventually turned into a vampire, later being killed by her fiancé Seward. To double-up as Vampire Bride. Cultured British accent required.
Florrie Hathersage (20 – 25)
The Westerman household’s new maid. Begins the play demure, but grows in confidence as the story develops. Sexually experienced and becomes pregnant by a soldier in the British Army, who is posted abroad. Yorkshire or nondescript Northern English accent required. To double-up as Vampire Bride.
Nurse Nisbett/Nurse Grice (20 – 60)
Masochistic senior nurse in Stoneyfields Asylum, London, and impliedly another half of Nurse Grice’s personality, sadistic senior nurse in Stoneyfields Asylum, London. By the end of the play the two ‘halves’ merge to create one complete person. Cockney accent preferred. To double-up as Vampire Bride.
Mrs Manners (40 – 70)/Doctor Goldman (25 – 70)
Stern housekeeper, and the highest ranking servant in the Westerman household. Mrs Manners is the authoritarian housekeeper to Mina and Lucy. Dr Goldman is a pompous rambling female psychiatrist. Could be separate roles.
MALE
Dr Arthur Seward (25 – 40)
Senior psychiatrist in Stoneyfields Asylum, London. Generally good-natured and honourable, albeit slightly lacking in social skills and typically Victorian repressed. Lucy’s fiancé, and eventually her killer. RP accent preferred.
Jonathan Harker (25 – 35)
Mina’s lover and fiance; an enthusiastic and naïve recently-qualified solicitor. Is imprisoned and altered by Dracula in Transylvania, before escaping and helping to hunt the vampire. RP accent required.
Count Vlad Dracula (40 – 60)
The titular vampire, who needs no introduction. Eastern European accent required
Prof Abrahan Van Helsing (45 – 75)
Peculiar Dutch professor and expert in medicine and the occult. Impliedly an old enemy of Dracula’s. Teaches Mina, Jonathan and Seward how to fight vampirism, and joins the battle himself. Dutch or nondescript pan-European accent required
Renfield (20 – 60)
Clairvoyant lunatic in Stoneyfields Asylum, London. Dracula’s rebellious servant. He eats insects and sparrows.
Male Orderly Drinkwater (20 – 60)
Gruff orderly at Stoneyfields Asylum, London. Ally and unofficial enforcer for Nurse Grice. He provides the muscle when patients need to be ‘restrained’. Cockney accent preferred.
